I know this has been discussed before, but I just wanted to know everyones feeligns about Kurts journals being published. Theres the whole 'its an invasion of his privacy' debate, but I heard somewhere that he may have actually intended to write the journals in the knowledge that they would eventually be read, so others could 'try and figure him out'.
What is your thoughts regarding this?

i think it's fucking disgusting and i don't give a shit if he's written about guitar riffs or his favourite porn, a personal thought is a personal thought and should be respected as such.

This was from an article from nme:
The first words you encounter in his spidery crawl are "Don't read my diary when i'm gone", although on the same page he typically contradicts himself: "OK, I'm going to work for now...please read my diary. Look through my things and figure me out"
Its really hard to say with this...but still I think the mere fact that Courtney published them was utterly disgusting in essence. I think the best way that he wanted us to understand him (Kurt) was through his music.

yeah i know dave, but that's one thought. as is his previous apparent statement about "do not read"... so i don't think the publication can be justified just by one fleeting comment. and i can't remember the quote, but it's in there somewhere about everyone who's targeted him... "you have raped me harder than you will ever know."
his memory has been absolutely picked apart by the vultures. everyone took everything until there was nothing left... don't get me wrong, i have no problem with courtney in general, but publishing his journals was just so, so, so fucking wrong. i nearly got banned from the hole boards for suggesting she should have donated the proceeds to a depression/suicide prevention charity. he was a person first, musician second. get relative: people have kittens here about someone asking if kevin has a girlfriend because it's an invasion of privacy. kurt had his private thoughts sorted through, bound up and sold off to the masses. the cash register rings once again.

i also feel strongly about that. my boyfriend bought me the journals as a surprise christmas present for when i flew home from Oz from my nana's funeral ( no i'm not trying to score sympathy votes for that -just statin' a fact) and its tore me apart whether to read or not read. i've gotten through about 10 pages and its sitting next to the VCR..oh the guilt! i just wondered if everyone had heard the supposed 'latest' that there's evidence KC's body was mutilated in the funeral home he was taken to. he was cut and bits taken from him (ie his heart cut out), hair shaven, 'FAG' carved into him and various other bizness -there's a tape claiming employees danced with his corpse and drank next to him and played Pearl Jam. if anything -the above makes me feel sicker than courtney publishing the journals. that's my two cents

It's a stupid, inane read and I doubt it brought anybody closer to understanding Kurt at all.

okay, im going to get creamed for this but... whatever. i agree with pretty uch all of what you guys are aying but...
oh shit, could it not be said that in some ways she has a right to sell it? how do we know the sotry behind it. its been said is flighty what his wishes were but... like how do we know he didnt say to her "oh when im dead sell my diaries" ill admit that okay that probably ddint happen but i like to put both sides forward so i cant be acused of.. well not doing that. i only say it becsue kelly and sarah seem pretty angry and i dont think its worth it... if kurt/nirvanas usic is so muhc more powerful and more menaingful that love publishing his diaries then the whole act doesnt matter. maybe shes poor at the mo or maybe she think that its the right thing to do or any such reasons but dont stress over her. just stent ot he music.
waits to be yelled at.

i'm not 'pretty angry', i just feel strongly about the issue. courtney does have the right to do it, obviously, she's in control of his estate. but that doesn't mean that she should have. as with all celebrities, privacy's a big deal and most have to sacrifice at least some degree of it. but think about having your own personal thoughts - when you're at home, depressed/high/what-fucking-ever - where you're just you and not 'the voice of a generation' - sorted through, sold off to a publishing company for $$$$, and analyzed by all and sundry. do you not think that is horrendously wrong and invasive? look how postal some people go when their journals are read... who hasn't hidden their own under a bed or some place where people can't get to it? why do they sell kiddie ones with locks on them? because they're viewed as a place to write your personal thoughts without judgement and criticism from outside contributors. i agree that the music is the only thing that the focus should be upon - which kind of helps further my point that this was a disgusting thing to do. that's my two cents [more like 50 ] anyway.

I think journals are personal and shouldn't be read by anybody else but the writer himself regardless of wether or not their famous - the diffrence between a journal and a autobiography is that autobiographies are written with the authors knowledge that the work will be read by the public - who really knows what Kurt was thinking - i think they should have be bequeathed to Frances Bean - not now cos she's to young - but when she's a bit older and she can understand him - it might be a way for her to get to know her dad as he died when she was very young.

Look i think that they shouldnt have been published, but then again, im pretty sure what was written in them is to an audiance, not to himself, he often asked "do you think" in it, not "i think"
So i think he expected them to be released, even through he probably didnt want them to in the first place
but hey, hes a rockstar
