i was having a conversation today with a mate about bands that we used to really love, who have recently or semi-recently released records that are absolute shite. and i'm interested if any of you were fans of a band that has put out something disastrous lately...
my list of 'they were okay once upon a time'
- everclear. heroin girl, santa monica, so much for the afterglow, everything to everyone... they were damn good. and then they went and released songs from an american movie and look where it got them... volvo driving soccer mom? *shakes head*
- bush. i digged sixteen stone and razorblade suitcase... fuck man, i loved razorblade suitcase. but their two efforts since have been horrific. and what with gavin trying to tackle the solo thing now, it's not looking good for the future.
- greenday. dookie came, dookie left and took their songwriting ability with it. good riddance [time of your life] has been the only thing remotely listenable in my opinion since... hitchin a ride probably hangs on by it's fingernails. the rest? tripe.
- garbage. so some people are going to yell at me probably, but shirley went from vow and i think i'm paranoid, being all sexy and femme and goddess-like, to... to... cherry lips? wtf? the hair needs to come back too.
- motor ace. complete and utter dive bomb. they make a great rock record, gain some devoted fans, then wave to the commercial radio stations, turn around, bend over and say "as you please."
who's got a contender?

SFK - A lot of people were disappointed with Echolalia.
Eskimo Joe - one word...SWEATER!
This is not my personal choice, i'm just giving contenders.

granted, i know it's all about individual preference, and yeah we should respect artists for 'evolving' and whatnot... but i have more. - alex lloyd. black the sun was a beautiful record. the second one... i forgot what the bugger's called, watching angels mend? if that's what falling in love does to ya... - ash. i don't think they've ever quite re-achieved the brilliance they managed on 1977. oasis could be argued here as well... frenzal rhomb... and i do remember everybody loved 'damnit' by blink 182 once.

I don't reckon Ash have gotten worse, they've still released some good songs - Walking Barefoot, although Envy was a bit of a bummer... and I do guess they're earlier stuff WAS a lot better..
I never really liked oasis.. whenever I think of them I think of Blur as well, but I'm not too high with the Blur knowledge...
Must agree with Garbage, although I've never really liked the female voice, Shirley really did make it sound good, and then the fall of Cherry lips and beautiful garbage and all that came. Everclear was definitely better back in the days of heroin girl etc, now they sound like they're out on their porch singing songs about some child daughter they have, on their 'Am radio'..
i guess another could be Offspring? I liked Smash and Americana, but their recent efforts have been dissapointing...

offspring definitely... smash was great, ixnay was okay... the albums since since... i guess with a lot of bands too, the fans have a tendency to see the early material as the 'best'/classic stuff. not all but definitely most.

Oh fuck yes. I loved the EP, and Five Star Laundry, but I'd say I've listened to the new album maybe four, five times max. It's just.. bad.

Ash are still going strong, 'Free all angels' was an awesome record and 'Nu-clear sounds' in my opinion was underated.
I didn't mind 'Shoot this', i preferred '5 star' more but it took a while for me to get into it.
Your right about Everclear (I haven't heard the newie), if you combined the best songs from American movie 1&2, you'd have a good record.
Its kinda hard to judge Eskimo joe since they've done the one album and a few Ep's. I like the album style better (although the self titled ep is mighty fine)
I guess ODS was better 'way back when..' Their fisrt few ep's were good so im thinking the album should be great. the album was a piece of shit, the songs seemed to get more dumber. Maybe they might turn it around

Echolalia sucked. Shoot this sucked. Murray St, was *pains me to say this* dissapointing. REMASTERING DIRTY WOO. Machina was dissapointing (bar 2-3 songs.) One by One dissapointed me at first, gets better with age. #3 is in no comparison to anything else Jebs have done but songs like YWIWB, Country Holiday Song, Ricochet and even NLF (sometimes) give me hope. Give up the phasers/flangers!!! How does a band like Motorace go from a brilliant E.P (LOWRIDER HELLO?!!) to Shoot This. It can get fucked.

i might get shot for saying this but, here goes... Silverchair - frogstomp and freak show were great...i dont even know the name of the cd that was released after that, but i disliked it a fair bit...they're ok now, but i reckon they've gone a bit too soft

Hey Sarah. Hey Jess. Yeah it's EMI from the Powderfinger board/s - feck knows exactly how I've ended up here on the Jebs' board, but here I am and I've signed in specifically to reply to this thread. *rubs hands together* I must agree on Garbage and with the Everclear thing, their last few records have been quite negligable. But at least their new single isn't using the bouncy rhythm they used in "Everything To Everyone", "Local God", "You Make Me Feel Like A Whore" and around 56 other songs. Art Alexakis could probably sue himself for plagiarism. The Cranberries - they were good in 1993, then became progressively more and more dire as the years went on. Unbelievably, they haven't split up yet. Live. Two rubbish albums on an increasingly rapid trot; if the next one also sucks then I'm writing them off completely. Incubus. SCIENCE is a cool album, Make Yourself was 60% rockin'. Now they can take a long walk off a short plank. Fear Factory - dear God did they go downhill with their last album. Just as well they broke up when they did, really. (The same could also apply to the Pumpkins.) Metallica - nuff said. Though I am keen to see if their new album turns it around. As the only person in Australia who owns the last two Bush albums, I have to say there are still some fucking great songs on both - "Prizefighter" off The Science Of Things is my favourite Bush song of all time, in fact. Easily as good as anything off Sixteen Stone. And Nimrod is clearly Green Day's best album...but as you said, each to their own eh.

I saw your avatar and was wondering, do you know how Mogwai's new stuff is going?
