speaking of the pumpkins... does anyone know of anywhere that's got the aeroplane flies high boxset for sale at a semi-reasonable price? i got mine about 3-4 years ago for $85, and i haven't seen one for sale anywhere since. i'd like to track another one down as a birthday pressie for a friend.

E-Bay's a good bet - but they can get ridiculously expensive. Still, it's a nice set.

I think that one reason why we like so much of the older stuff better is that when it was made, the band might not have cared so much if it was perfect, it was just about making the music and having fun with it. That comes across when you listen to it. Some pretty good examples of this are:
silverchair (frogstomp was raw and I loved it! But with each album they've tried more and more to get it perfect and with each polish it loses some of the emotion that it may have had to begin with) Garbage (even live they add new bits to their old songs and that really shits me!) No Doubt Motor Ace
Another thing is that some of the old songs are quite simple (a factor which is very underrated in may cases as simplicity can be a beautiful thing) but as time goes on the artists seem to think that to put out a quality record it has to be more complex.

Stimpleton, I think what you said is certainly an issue. I'm also thinking record company interfearance and expectations drive bands to try too hard to make a polished album and perhaps even burnout from touring.

definitely. and polished isn't always good - as someone said previously, it can take the 'heart' out of the music... after all, isn't music an expression of humanity? - and humans certainly aren't perfect.
