Get ready. The "New Detention" is in session.
Released on June 3, 2002, the anticipated third album from Grinspoon is a powerful and cohesive burst of prime rock & roll. "New Detention" captures both the adrenaline-charged highs of the band's celebrated live shows and the more subtle craftsmanship of their now finely-honed songwriting. This is an album with immediacy and depth - the first listen will knock you around, but subsequent plays will reveal new layers.
Having toured Australia and North America extensively while selling over 250,000 copies of their first two albums - 1997's "Guide To Better Living" and 1999's "Easy" - Davern, vocalist Phil Jamieson, bassist Joe Hansen and drummer Kristian Hopes decided that with their third album they had to move up to a new gear. The first step was an exhaustive and extended bout of songwriting where only the best tunes were considered.
Pleased with their compositions, Grinspoon then headed into the studio with Phil McKellar (Silverchair, Spiderbait), a long-time friend who had handled production duties on "Guide To Better Living". Two sessions, firstly at Festival Studios in Sydney and then at Mangrove Studio outside Sydney, brought the album to fruition.
Having got reacquainted with their fans having played this year's Big Day Out as well as a brief, sellout National tour for the "Chemical Heart" single, Grinspoon are rearing at the bit to launch into a full-scale National tour to introduce "New Detention".
Concludes Davern, "This is our 7th year and it's shaping us as the best yet."
