I had to read Emma for English during the Holidays. Now I'm reading 'The Fatal Shore' by Robert Hughes for History Extension. It's heavy and you never get any where, you can read for an hour and discover you haven't got anywhere. But you know a shitload more about the history and landings of discoverers as well as the symptoms of scurvy in sailors which in the end has nothing to do with what I'm supposed to be studying, convict women.
I'm also reading, studying a book called 1788, which is basically a summary of everyone on the 1st fleet. One person got 7 years' transportation because he picked up an egg off the road which he found however a neighbour saw him and reported it stolen. His wife then committed a similar crime to go with him but when she got there he had either gone somewhere else or died.
It was also a capitol offence to ; - run from rape - arson (burning a house or hut, a rick of corn, an insignificant pile of straw) - sodomy - picking pockets - stealing over the value of 40s from a dwelling or house - being found begging off a soldier or sailor. - poaching a rabbit - breaking down the head or mound off a fish pond - cutting down an ornamental shrub - appearing on a highroad with a sooty face.

run FROM rape? what the fuck??
so if a man was trying to rape a woman, the woman would be punished for trying to get away?

That's what it said in the book, unless the book got it wrong. I didn't exactly understand that rule either. But I also didn't consider it impossible, if they are going to hang someone for cutting down a bush why wouldn't they hang them for running from rape.
There is anouther stupid law; - It is a capital offence to pose as an Egyptian (impersonate a gypsie).
No wonder all their gaols filled up, you couldn't do anything with out being sentenced to death or 7 years transportation.

oh and property was valued more than life.
It was a capital offence to kidnap an heiress. Not because of the rape but because she is the possession of her family.
Also attempted murder was only considered a misdemenor. Those times were truley fucked.

what if the rapist was trying to sodomise the woman. could she run, or did she just have to walk slowly.

i think you've been reading too much of mick foley's book i've read Mick Foley's book and it's actually quite a good read. It's interesting to see how a wrestler talks about the business out of character and destroys many of the myths surrounding the business. He's certainly got some great stories to tell, specially at the start about how he lost his ear in a match in germany. For someone who's suffered so many blows to the head, it's amazing he can write an 800-odd page book that's actually kinda well written. </mark>

I read it too, of course. In a way, he did kinda 'prostitute' his body, taking all those falls and blows, which evidently shortened his career, but he really did bring something to wrestling that was previously never before seen. Fuck, the guy took two leaps off an 18 ft (?) cage. He really got to the top the hard way. [/mark as well]
