i'm nicking this thread from another forum, because it's pretty interesting and a lot of people have different views on it. www.mykeru.com/pages/ripper.htmwww.mykeru.com/pages/logs.txt [unedited chat transcript] to cut a long story short, this guy called brandon vegas was a regular in a drugs channel on irc. he logged on one night with this absolutely lethal cocktail of drugs beside him, turned on his webcam and, in an attempt to prove his so-called 'toughness', downed them all - not before having other chatters egg him on and encourage him to see how far he could go. he died onscreen. now the family of ripper is trying to sue the chatters for not helping him when they could have - calling the authorities was discussed in full detail in the channel, just no-one ended up doing anything about it. so my question to you is, do these people hold any remote shred of responsibility for this, or is he entirely to blame for his actions? a part of me thinks it's really sad because the guy obviously was in need of attention, but then i also think that if you take drugs then you fucking know the risks [and that is general use, not ridiculous quantities like what he had with him.]

Although one of the people on the chat was a real shit and was egging him on, I don't think he really knew how serious it all was. He kept saying 'Ripper knows what he's doing', he (Ripper) also made it appear like he'd done it before so the guy got too cocky, I didn't read it all, it was too long.
I don't think the parents should sue. All in all their son knew he was taking a huge risk, a risk that came with certified death, so why do it. This is what you get when you show off. Anyway, how could anyone alert anyone. They didn't know where he lived or anything. Mabe if someone did get enough guts to call the cops what would they do, tell them to piss off as they didn't know who the dumb fuck was either?
It's sad that the guy died and the people who were online are going to feel like shit for ever, knowing that they couldn't, or didn't do anything to save him. Let that be their punishment. No one not even the Brendan dude was innocent.
So yeah, it's fucked, very fucked.

You shouldn't be allowed to sue a company/other people for your own/a family member's stupidity.
Recently, there's been cases where people have tried to sue councils because they broke their necks at a beach, but it was their own stupidity that got them there in the first place. One guy was on E and drunk and dived into a sandbank, and the other guy dived off a pier and hit a rock.
If you take drugs, then you should know the risks and well, i have no sympathy for anyone who get's fucked up from that.

this is america though where they sue macdonalds for making people fat [or false advertising or whatever it was, if you want to get technical]. and i agree totally with you guys about the drugs thing, if you're dumb enough to take all those pills then you get what's coming to you. but it shits me that people visibly watched him throw back the drugs and not only didn't do anything about it, but encouraged him to keep going.

In the end people are just trying to find someone to blame for their own stupidity. There are so many cases of people sueing companies because they believe they are the victims and want money in return. And so many companies/groups are so scared of being sued that they just automatically give the family a money packet. Like if a child dies at school you automatically recieve 1 million dollars or something. Its like they're trying to shut you up.

agreed - companies get sued for such ridiculous amounts these days that they're willing to just front up some cash so it doesn't go any further. people sue for anything these days - the cigarette smoker who went for the tobacco company [and won at that!]

people sue for anything these days - the cigarette smoker who went for the tobacco company [and won at that!] i think you'll find in that case the money was awarded because the tobacco company had proof of the harm cigarettes could do, but destroyed all the evidence whilst continuing to sell the product without telling people of the risks that they knew it carried. She started smoking before it was publicly known to be dangerous, so it's not as if she had been warned of the effects of smoking when she decided to start.

you're right michael... what if everyone who smoked [and started up before it was known to be dangerous, as you said] came forth and wanted benefits though? obviously i know not all of the people ended up with cancer like this woman did, but i'm sure plenty of them must have developed an array of diseases/serious health problems as a direct result of smoking. i just thought that case was a little bizarre and no doubt opened roads for a lot of people to seek damages.

The tobacco companies knowingly led many people to death or disease. If they want to play in their own shit, then they cant complain about the smell.
