I was watching Oprah yesterday (as you do when your unemployed and bored) and it was about ex Illinois Governor George Ryan who spared the lives of 167 men and women who where in prision on death row. Three men where fully pardoned and now walk free all the other inmates will spend the rest of thier lives in prision. Why Did He Do It? Since Illinois reinstated capital punishment in 1977, more death row inmates had been found innocent than executed. the four men pardoned landed on death row solely by confessing to a crime. However, it's been determined that those confessions were coerced through threats and torture. In other cases, defendants have been given poor attorneys, they haven't been judged by their peers, or courts haven't looked at new DNA evidence. the families of the victims were outraged that ryan did this. I was wondering what other people thought - if a person kills another human being should he/she be sentanced to death himself? or is life in prision enough of a punishment?

i think it's a fucking great thing. look at that guy who had been locked up for 19 years, and was innocent! 19 fucking years! that's longer than a lot of people here have been alive... it is absolutely unforgivable that he'd been in jail that long, let alone was about to get killed had the law not been overturned.
i understand that the families of the victims must suffer a living hell as a result of the murders and crimes. and i can understand them wanting justice. but the consequences if a mistake is made are just not worth risking. they all say "imagine if it was your husband that got killed..." well imagine if it was your husband that had been in that cell for two decades and was innocent.

I am completly against the death penalty. What's the point? You're only being a hypocrite by killing someone for killing someone else. I could go on all day but I'll shut up now.

a greater punishment for a murderer would be rotting away in a dank prison until they die naturally. compared to that, death is a quick way out.

the death penalty's stupid.. i agree wiht the slushpup in that rotting away in jail is a greater punishment and ive heard of that illinois guy before and what he did was great a reason behind his decision to not have capital punishment was becasue he said that people shouldn't have to die just because their lawyer was shite as lot's of the people of death row were sort of impoverished and of a minority group or what not. i feel sorry for the people who's loved ones who have been killed but think of how much it hurt them when their loved one died. the person who killed them is the one who sohould be punished not the one who gto a confession beat out fo them. and their families weren't the ones who committed the crimes.
enough of uncontrolled and uncheked ramblings
