Yeah, but what I'm trying to say is that you don't need any practice to play with a pick. Well, maybe 10 mins to get used to it, or something.

lets just agree to disagree on the pick issue. different people prefer different things to others. besides, practising geetar isnt just about picking or strumming the whole time... but i digress. *finished*

Yeah but who said we were talking about guitar? If you hadn't noticed, they are 2 seperate instruments, might I add both really easy to spam powerchords or root notes on respectively, in semiquaver timing, in order to be recognised as "good" (ie punk)

lol, at this stage it's not such a good idea for me to get involved in an argument about the technicality of guitars... I should learn how to play it properly first.

Why should we do so just cause you tell us to? Anyway, back to the bass-ics (hor hor), anyone know what head Ness uses? It's a Peavey, I think, but i'm interested in the actual model.

Actually your wrong about the pick thing panga, i play bass with a pick, but i can also play with my fingers, i rather the more sharp sound that comes out of the bass with a pick, not the more mumbled sound. and you will find some real awesome bass players play with a pick. one being nate mandell from the foo fighters.
Picks are much faster and i find gives you a lot more chance to experiment and go all over the board, where as with your fingers, althrough it takes a lil more practice you cant do as much.
Thats just my views through, i mean i just use a pick for the sharper sound that i get out of the bass.

Thats just my views through, i mean i just use a pick for the sharper sound that i get out of the bass. Pick is twang. Only good if you're looking for a more percussive sound, which can be handy at times. And you can do just as much with your fingers, easily. If you listen to jazz/blues/funk bass players you'll find that any of them easily school anybody who does shit with a pick. Experimentation isn't down to whether you use a pick of your fingers, it's in your brain. And the mumbled sound of a bass? It's good. Bass isn't a melodic instrument, it's a rythym one. The 'muffled' sound as you call it gives the bass a smooth tone and, i think, unless you're playing pop punk, makes the music sound a lot sexier, groovier and tighter. As for Nate Mendel, if you listen to the Foos live or on the records, you can hear that he only uses a pick due to the speed of some of Dave's riffs. His whole set up sounds like he is using his fingers. Deadened tone, massive bassy ampeg stack, the fender jazz, plus his unique and awesome style of playing helps him achieve this. He doesn't use the pick to go 'all over the board'...his bass playing is very smart and compliments the music perfectly.
