IMO Ness needs to utilise that fender and ampeg cab better Like, get rid of the pick for a start. Can't really stand bassist who pick.

what difference does it make if she uses one or not? steph from sfk does as well...
vanessa is a fantastic bassist with a style all her own, and i think it's pretty easy to sit on your arse and judge... fuck, the girl plays brilliantly. you're pretty shallow if you "can't stand" bassists that use picks.

Well, I just reckon that I'd respect her a lot more if she didn't. Cause it's pretty darn easy to use a pick to play bass if you ask me... Doesn't take much at all.

i really don't think it makes a difference* - you've got to pluck or strum the string regardless of whether you're using your fingers or a pick. and by plucking i mean you can still use the pick in the same way as you can your fingers, even though you're not technically 'grabbing' the string. i don't see using a pick as being any less skillful a musician.
*some guitar whiz is going to have me on toast, i know it.

It does make a difference, first of all when you pick the string there is a different sound, and also it is less skillful because it is easy to just use your wrist in that strumming motion for fast notes. When you're finger picking, it takes a bit to build it up in the finger speed, also you have more things to play the strings with, so you have a bigger range in what you can do with them. Using a pick for bass is generally regarded for weak people cause they can't be bothered developing strong finger muscles and fingertips for playing those fat arsed strings, and so the pick is a easy alternative for them.

gimme a break. ditto. the sound never came into this discussion - it was about skill. i respect your opinion dude, really i do, but i can't for one minute agree that vanessa should be given less respect as a bassist because she uses a pick. but that's cool... we'll agree to disagree.

okay i have a friend who is like you and hates people who use picks. seriously there are bassists he's never heard play but as soon as he finds out they use a pick he immeadiately says they're are going to be crap. using a pick doesnt always mean that they are crap. okay theres the stupid thing that like... they've learnt using a pick and thats the way they play and finger picking would change their style and the way they play and would should they have to when it doesnt mkae a big difference. theres nothing wrong with using a pick and, okay, maybe it does sound different but ness is a great bassist and i dont think it affects the quality of her playing. don't be an idiot and just say people are crap bassists based on the fact they have a different style.
