Can someone tell me the reason why a 'select few' here feel the need to attack others by calling them gay, basically in a derogatory manner?
I'm not gay myself, but I just find it intolerant and rather stupid to just hear use of the actual word as if its a bad thing to be homosexual.

Is there a real need to insult someone by calling them a fag, or are those distributing the remarks so mentally devoid that they can't come up with another form of insult?

Its not necessary. I'm not saying that my bringing this up will solve the problem and make the world a happier place, but I thought people were more tolerant than to go about using the term in a negative light.
Which is all the more surprising since most people here are in their late teens, not year 2.

i'm with arcarsenal here. and while we're at it, can people also stop using the terms 'arsehole', 'cunt' and 'dick' in a derogatory manner. I'm an elbow myself, but my cousin is a cunt and he finds it very upsetting that people are so immature they cant think of a better insult. All it does is make people like my cousin ashamed to be what they are. Have some tolerance, cunts have rights too.  |

arcasa-whatsit. although i do on some level agree with you on the use of gay as derogatory and what not i seriously think you should just deal with it. i hate the word cunt but me saying something aint gonna stop it and they dont really give a fuck if i care. we all know they only abuse gays cos their closet cases anyway  |

i dont think people will ever stop using the words "gay" or "fag" in a derogitory way and thats pretty sad.  it seems its too ebbed into english cultural slang by now. in fact, ive noticed for a while now that when people say something like "thats so gay", "what a fag" ect, it has nothing to do with homosexuality but more with criticising something totally separate. *rant rant* oh michael, you elbow you... |

i agree with slushpup on that, i dont think its about being derogotory(sp?) towards gay people but just being a way of shutting someone down. could be called worse. No matter what tho, anti-gay humour, if that is even what it is, will always be around, dont let it bother you, because there are more important matters at hand

Yeah it's bad that people use homosexuality in that context but don't you also find it weird that 'we' use genitalia to insult people as well, especially since they give us so much pleasure. Although you do here people say "fucking poof", "arse muncher" ect alot I doubt mnay of the people who say it are really homophobic, mabe some are but the vast majority are just uncreative, every insult that I can think of is developed from the hatred from some form of minority.

I see his point of view though. Calling someone gay as opposed to calling someone a cunt are two totally different contexts. One is a life decision, the other is just the opposite of a dick.
Aaron/Josh etc just call me gay as a certain family member thought I actually was.
