Poppies

I don't know how popular wearing poppies on Remembrance day is in Australia, or where ever you may be, but this year in Canada more than 17 million poppies have been 'sold'.  That's quite a lot, since our entire population is somewhere around 31 million. Probably due to the September 11th (and maybe November 12th?) events.

"Poppy week every November; the time of year when the entire population of the Commonwealth of Nations joins together and by the wearing of a simple emblem, a red poppy, salutes the memory of those who have sacrificed their health, their strength, even their lives in the hope that we might live as free people in a free country."

Only this year have I noticed that there are SO many people who won't wear a poppy because they glorify war.

"I do not wear a poppy because I believe no others should follow those already dead, those who short years ago lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved and were loved."

Up to this past year I have always worn a Poppy for Rememberance day.  

So what I'm curious about, is how YOU guys feel about poppies.  Do you wear one? Why or why not?

i dont wear poppies.
In fact i heard the last post being played in the morning and was like why the fuck is that on??? and someone replied with "its rememberance day stupid". So i walked off played geetar and ditched showing gratitude completely.
I dont respect war. No matter what its for or how bad the circumstances are.

last year on anzac day i went down to the local beach for the dawn service and cried my little eyes out, just seeing the men standing there looking at the sun rise, but thats nothin to do with rememberance day.
i think its important that we recognise that if it wasnt for them we wouldnt have the country we do now, but i think that we shouldnt try and glorify war, especially not now.

i reckon we're lucky, (and no im not using the lucky country cliche) we dont have all this terrorism shit, (yet) we're too far away for anything to get at us! We dont have war, we dont have violence etc etc
There alot of things that we do have too, but i think in the sceme of things we are doin ok.
oh and to answer the original question, poppy week could've passed by without anyone knowing, to much politics goin on round our brown land at the moment

I didn't know that we are supposed to where poppies, I've heard of people wearing rosemary or is that just on ANZAC Day.  I think one of the teachers at my school went to Vietnam or something beacause every single ANZAC and Rememberance Day we have to have a formal assembly.  I was supposed to perform in my band on Sunday but it was hot so we decided to hold our one minute silence just before we went on.

how can u not like australia... sure, its not as good as da magic faraway tree but anyone that has even tha littlest knowledge of the world and all the kerrazy fuct up fings that happen would appreciate wot we have...

so im not a patriot. I didnt know that was such a goddamn felony. Yes i have been out of australia. Ive toured all over europe and ive been to japan. I prefer the lifestyle there so much more. I like to live my life in a blur. Not enough happens in australia. The slightest tremor of exitement is taken overboard. whereas i sit here still not convinced. I dont like the relaxed state that australia is in. Its just such a slow moving country, and it doesnt change because thats the lifestyle that a lot of people like, but i personally dont.
i enjoy all the fucked up shit that happens in the world because i wouldnt have the faintest bit of exitement if it didnt exist.

so would u rather live in NY? and get bombed by terrorists? it's sad but true, things like what happened on 9/11 make for excitment + create interest, giving people a chance to bond together.

never been to australia, want to though, never even been outa this counrty...ya it does suk w/ all this afgan shit now, u dont exactly feel safe anymore.

Hmm to that dick who won't wear a poppie.  Do you know what it is about?  It doesn't glorify war.  Its so we remember the dead and sacrafice so that we can learn from war and hopefully not resort to it in the future.  The poppie is supposed to represent the poppie fields in Flanders.  That was the scene of some of the most viscious battles of WW1.  Hundreds of thousands of troops were gunned down in the poppie fields and the poppies reminded the soldiers of blood.  For example, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, there were 60,000 brittish casualties in one day.  stuff like that doesn't glorify war. Hence the motto 'Lest we Forget'

well, i know that poppies dont glorify war. Nonetheless it glorifies the people that died in the war. My not being a patriot and all, i dont care. Anyone who goes to war has a death wish. In fact if people really beleive they want to go to war they should really think a little more about their contributions to the world and how much more important it would be to just stay where they are and complete the life they have, rather than meddling with the worlds political affairs.
